A 130 year old stone house sits in the rural hills of Alaçatı, an idyllic town on the west coast of Turkey with a rich history of winemaking and olive pressing. The historic building has been carefully restored by esteemed architect and interior designer Erdem Hamza. Originally an oil pressing facility, the building has been reimagined as a residence, abundant in natural textures and ancient details.
The walls of the house are partially exposed, revealing the natural beauty of the old stone and giving a visual flow through the house. Natural materials are used throughout the building, with marble, wood and stone in muted colours, giving a calm yet warm and inviting mood to the interior.
In the kitchen, the colour palette is washed in warm wood and white tones, with pops of matte black hardware and art, adding depth and contrast to the scheme. The walls are coated with White Zellige tiles; each one is handmade in Morocco and carefully hand cut, baked and glazed, which gives a unique rustic appeal and ties in beautifully with the ancient look of the building. The glazed surface of the tiles reflects the light and colours of the room, making the space feel spacious and airy with hints of subtle colour drawn from the pinky nude wooden surfaces.

A stone archway leads from the kitchen to the dining room, with whitewashed exposed stone walls, the white zellige tiles are applied to the ceiling, nodding to the design of the kitchen whilst creating a new approach to material and design. Here, the tiles offer an unmissable feature, softly bouncing diffused light from the central pendant lamp. This room has an ethereal ambience and is an ideal space to relax and entertain.
Zellige tiles are revered for their unique handcrafted beauty. Originating in the 14th century, Zellige tiles are still produced today, using the same traditional craft techniques. To discover the beauty and versatility of authentic Moroccan Zellige tiles, browse our range here.
